The Corsair was produced from May 1940 – 1952, and was the first purpose-designed shipboard fighter aircraft. Powered by a Double Wasp engine, on October 1st 1940, it became the first aircraft to exceed 400mph.

It was one of the favoured fighter support aircraft for US Marine forces in the Pacific – as the troops moved from island to Japanese-held island, Corsairs would run vital missions from airfields on nearby liberated islands.

After initially encountering landing problems, its design was updated – and it quickly became one of the most capable carrier-based fighter-bombers of the war – and would remain in service through the Korean War, and into the French Colonial Wars with Indochina and Algeria.
