Resenting taxes imposed by the British parliament, patriot protests escalate to a peak on December 16, 1773 with the destruction of a shipment of tea, known as ‘the Boston Tea Party’. The British government punished Massachusetts by closing the port of Boston and taking away self-government. The Patriots responded by setting up a shadow government that took control of the province outside of Boston and would place General George Washington to take charge of militia units besieging British forces stationed in Boston,

The British government in February 1775 declared Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion. Then on April 19 – 1775 the first military actions of the American War of Independence (or Revolutionary War) took place, as fighting broke out between Massachusetts militia units and British regulars at Lexington and Concord.

About 700 British Army regulars in Boston, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, were given secret orders to capture and destroy rebel military supplies reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord.

The Patriot colonials had received word weeks before the expedition that their supplies might be at risk and had moved most of them to other locations. They also received details about British plans on the night before the battle and were able to rapidly notify the area militias of the British expedition.

As British troops entered Lexington the first shots were fired. The outnumbered Militia fell back, and the regulars headed on to Concord, where they split into companies to search for the supplies.

At the North Bridge in Concord, approximately 400 militiamen engaged 100 British regulars. With their officers wounded and in disarray the outnumbered regulars fell back from the bridge to rejoined the main body of British forces in Concord.

Having searched fruitlessly, the British forces began their return march to Boston. More militiamen continued to arrive from neighboring towns. Battles and skirmishes continued throughout the day as the regulars marched back towards Boston. Returning to Lexington, Lt. Col. Smith’s expedition was rescued in a timely fashion by reinforcements under Brigadier General Hugh Percy, the combined force then marched back to Boston under heavy fire in a tactical withdrawal and eventually reached the safety of Charlestown. The accumulated militias blockaded the narrow land accesses to Charlestown and Boston, starting the siege that would continue on till March 1776
